The AX Eco Project : 100 mpg target ! In the 90's, the super light Citroën AX diesel held a Guinness record as the most efficient production car available, capable of 65 mpg (US) at 56 mph (90 km/h). HypermilerAX's modifications have already improved this to 80 mpg (US) at 56 mph. Now he's aiming for 90 mpg to beat the 1994 "AX Eco" concept car, and is also eyeing a 100 mpg tank (2000 km). Taller Tire Test (5.7% MPG increase observed on Honda CR-Z @ 55-65 MPH) The purpose of the test was to determine whether larger diameter tires, which result in lower engine RPM and higher load for a given speed, can improve gas mileage. The test car has a 6-speed manual transmission. At highway speeds (55-65 MPH), the larger tires gave a 5.7% average increase in MPG. The engine ran about 200 RPM lower. By SecondWind - 72 replies

Why no more lean burn?? If the Honda Insight, Civic VX and HX were so good at achieving high mileage with lean burn, why is it not in all current Hondas and other economy cars? This thread looks at reasons for its demise & possible return in new cars. By Mad Adder - 130 replies

Dam, It works! (Air dam on Smart Fortwo: 3-4% MPG improvement) In addition to a clear lower grille block and smooth, black wheel covers, Chumly added and tested a simple air dam: "I just made an air dam out of some lawn edging. A-B-A testing shows 3.16% - 4.2% (avg 3.73%) better mileage. It took a whole half hour to make and install it, I should have done this a long time ago!" By chumly - 50 replies

1997 Civic CX to HX engine/VX trans swap! 63 MPG @ 62 MPH When his 1997 Civic CX engine needed a lot of work, turbovr41991 decided to spend his repair time doing something different: he picked up a rusty Civic HX and swapped over the more efficient lean burn engine instead, and went with the more efficient gearing of the Civic VX. With a few other modifications in place, the car is returning seriously impressive highway fuel economy. By turbovr41991 - 187 replies

2005 Prius engine into 1986 MR2: mk1 1nzfxe Prius swap (gas only) Mr220v informs us that used Prius engines are dirt cheap, and therefore fun to experiment with! He swapped one into an MR2, and using the Prius variable cam timing/Atkinson design, he now has variable compression on demand, via a push-button. He's still working out tuning, but fuel economy has gone up a healthy amount, from ~30 to 37 mpg (US). By mr220v - 114 replies
