This tank got me home from my big Utah trip. There was lots of high speed driving but the newly de-boogered diesel still got 50 mpg for the trip.

This tank was at the start of a hiking trip in southern Utah. I had the “All Weather” tires on and recently did an intake cleaning. The diesels get blow-by oil and exhaust gas in the intake plenum and gunk it up. It is amazing that some of the VW diesels still run, they are so plugged up. I use a catch can and a tune that only introduces EGR during warmup so my car made it to 125,000 miles before I felt motivated enough to remove the intake and clean it out. It does seem to run better and smoother. My mpg is not up due to extended periods of 75 mph driving.

Since fuel prices spiked this spring we have taken many out of town trips in the Golf instead of my wife's Audi. This has required sustained high speed driving and more use of A/C to keep everyone happy. MPG has been surprisingly good. Perhaps I should have purchased Ecopias long ago?

Since fuel has become so expensive we have been doing lots of weekend trips in the VW. We have my wife and myself and lots of luggage. We both have spring allergies so we have been using the A/C on "recirc" non stop. Much of the time we have been driving "5 over" the limit and still the TDI has been returning decent mpg.

This tank took me most of the way home to Colorado. I had dry roads but it was terribly windy for this leg of the trip. My mpg was killed by the steady 30 mph winds out of the northwest. For good mpg do not drive across KS or NE when it is windy. It is almost always windy in the Midwest.

This tank took me all the way to Wichita at close to the posted interstate speed limits. This was the first tank on a new set of Toyo Celsius “all weather” tires. The look like regular all season tires but they have the 3 peak “mountain snowflake” designation. They have amazing snow traction but ride smooth and quiet on dry roads. They seem to return better mpg than the studded snow tires.

It was terribly hot and smokey from wildfires all over the Western US this summer so I was not driving to my favorite biking spots as much. My fill-up from July lasted me till the winter solstice. When I did drive I was driving faster than in the past.

This tank took me the rest of the way across Nebraska, part of Wyoming and part of Colorado to my home. Terrible wind and a “check engine light” for a failed MAF. It is a short fill so I could calculate the total miles and mileage for the trip.

This was a short fill because I had a mass air flow sensor acting up and it threw the instant mileage on the ScanGuage off and was reading lower than hand calculated. I started driving before daylight and had a couple of hours before the wind got really ugly again. The rest of the way across Iowa, all of Nebraska, and Wyoming the wind was 20-30 mph out of the north. It was pushing me around all day. Despite that it was full steam ahead with the cruise set to 80 and even 85 in part of WY.

I filled up the morning I started my return trip to Colorado. This tank took me to Iowa City IA. The wind was a headwind while I was traveling but the front moved through so then it was out of the northwest as I was heading northwest. I had lots of wind and high speed interstate driving. In Iowa the posted limit was 70 so I set the cruise control to 75 mph.

The Interstate speed limit is 75 mph across WY and NE so my goal was to travel “5 over” for the trip to see what impact it would have on mpg. I had strong winds out of the northeast for much of the trip.

New Bridgestone Ecopias are mounted on alloy rims for summer. They feel like they really do roll better even though they are brand new. I was having fun driving the Golf on some great mountain roads for this tank. Definitely not hypermiling but pretty good mpg regardless.

I needed a clutch so while the tranny was out I had a lifted slip differential installed. The good news is it really seems to help traction in snow on unplowed sections getting to the trailhead. So far there seems to be no mpg penalty. The lower numbers on this tank are from shorter trips around town.

First full tank since the Malone tune and mpg numbers look really good. I was on track for a record tank but the last 200 miles was done with studded snow tires and cold temps which hurt my E-On coast distances. Some 50 miles of this was done in a snowstorm with slushy roads, lights, wipers and defrosters running.

I use engine ON coasting on hills and DFCO engine braking when I need to decelerate. I wish I could have driven the tank to empty. I still had a third of a tank left when I refilled.

Still on the highway with strong winds, high speeds and constant A/C use. This was a road trip clear across Kansas. Hot windy Kansas. I am sure the dense, low elevation air also hurt my highway mpg. There is a drive I often do into Wyoming where the elevation in Colorado and Wyoming are about 8,500' for much of the trip and my mileage goes way up on those legs of the trip.

I did a 1 gallon fuel stop to reach 915 miles on this tank. I have driven over 800 miles on a fill-up on previous tanks though.

This tank included a highway blast to Moab with speeds up to 75 and 80 with A/C on (by my wife). She loves to drive this car.

Astute observers will notice there is no way a VW can hold 306 gallons of fuel. In the interest of time and accuracy I have added up all my entries since I purchased the car used in May of 07 so this will show a true lifetime fuel log. I will add individual entries beginning in 2009.
